Leading corporate governance professor (and blogger) Stephen Bainbridge implicitly picks up on a point that we have been making forever: That the internal controls requirements and executive liability we impose on private businesses (and especially those with many shareholders) ought to apply to the government. Or, put differently, if they are not useful in enforcing accountability in government, why are they useful for business?
Government is about avoiding accountability. That's why it exempts itself from so many laws.
